When I’m designing a wedding I tend to focus more on how I can best represent the couple through design rather than on the latest trends. Most often than not, however, the client will come to me with a pinterest board full of the most popular images and styles floating around. And that’s totally fine….there’s a reason why the trends become, well, trends and it’s fun to incorporate one or two once in awhile. Part of my job is to look past the trends and see if there is a way we can put a twist on them that makes sense with the couples’ style and personality. I don’t usually make yearly wedding trend lists but for 2017 I feel like there are going to be some contenders that I can get behind. Here are just a few –
I am so, so happy that minimalist design is finally becoming more popular in the wedding world. I am a big supporter of less is more and, thanks to so many great designers like Joy Thigpen and Ginny Au setting the bar way high, tables are getting a little less cluttered and everything is looking a little more magical.
Organic Floral Arrangements
Flowers are my greatest love and I swoon over ethereal, organic, wild arrangements. There has been a shift over the years from tight, perfectly round centerpieces to more asymmetrical, flowing styles. This year we’ll see even more breathing room in between flowers and, of course, lots and lots of greens.
And that brings us to the color of the year – greenery. Last year we made more garlands than I can possibly count and this year it isn’t looking very different. The garland is here to stay…at least for another year or so. But I love seeing greenery in abundance in areas too – the arch, fireplace, even trees brought inside a gorgeous tent.
And speaking of greens (again). We kind of called it two years ago but I still have so many clients wanting to go in a more tropical direction and I couldn’t be happier. There is a way to do tropical without being cheesy I swear! Simple bud vases with monstera leaves and pops of color and minimal (there’s that word again!) tablescapes.
